Thailand and Vietnam are both amazing countries that have a lot to offer in terms of cuisine and natural beauty. But as anyone who has visited Thailand will tell you, it’s full of tourists. Thailand is a perfect country if you want to relax on a beach and have your adventures (in most cases) handed to you.
Backpacking is about exploring and experiencing things that aren’t exploited for commercial gain. Exploration and adventure should not feel cheapened and synthetic. Vietnam does offer the picturesque white beaches and resorts that cater to your every need. But when it comes to a feeling of adventure that is authentic and raw, Vietnam is second to none other in South East Asia. Vietnam is somewhat untapped when it comes to backpackers as it seems that most people don’t know what Vietnam truly has to offer. The country has countless breathtaking views and experiences. Many of which will stay with you for as long as you can remember. Now it might seem as if I am biased and honestly, I suppose I am. The reason for this is because Vietnam has made me realize that an authentic experience far outweighs a vacation where I only feel like a tourist and not a backpacker. Truly experiencing a country is not about having your every need catered to. It is about seeing and doing things that you will never forget and keep with you for as long as you live. Vietnam is where the adventure has felt the most authentic to me.
So in conclusion, if you want to feel like a tourist and relax and be served drinks poolside Vietnam and Thailand will both work for you. But if you want a taste if true unadulterated adventure and feel what it’s like to be a backpacker then the first place you want to go is Vietnam.
